On The Struggle To Learn A New Language

Beautiful words waft through your brain
By the hot air of chatter,
Some words stick to the branches, clinging on,
Kept on by the force of repeated conversation.
But when you want to pluck that leaf
From the tree of your mind
And bring it to your lips-
It floats away into the night.
It takes another conversation gust
To bring the leaf back to the tree
And though the branches are stronger now,
It still quivers in its struggle to stay.
But, one day
When it comes back again,
You grab it,
Determined to not let it go this time.

But, of course, you are only human,
You can only hold onto it so long
With that slippery grip,
And with so many words beating against the tree,
Daily, hourly,
How long can it stay in your hands?
You've just got to hope
That by the time you have to let it go,
A tiny, permanent word bud
Has started to grow.

My Barcelona

After a year in this lovely city, here is a short, honest, ever-so-slightly pretentious reflection of what Barcelona now means to me.

A fierce locality,
No formality,
That is my Barcelona.

Vermut during the day,
From this you can't stray,
That is my Barcelona.

Tourists flock to the beach,
(Best ones out of reach),
That is my Barcelona.

At beach bars, I'd rather
Have local cava,
That is my Barcelona.

With musicians playing live,
Gaudi's Parc Guell thrives.
That is my Barcelona.

Down Carrer Blai is good
For tasty Basque food-
That is my Barcelona.

Random street fiestas
And then siestas-
That is my Barcelona.

Quaint and dark Gothic streets,
(Piss under your feet),
That is my Barcelona.

Rambla's not the purist,
Drowning in tourists,
That is my Barcelona.

Skaters have right of way
All times of the day-
That is my Barcelona.

A menu del dia
Over sangria-
That is my Barcelona.

Vendors in all weather
Thinking they're clever,
That is my Barcelona.

Footballers of all ages
Getting in rages-
That is my Barcelona.

Some patatas and pan
Before any man-
That is my Barcelona.

Running next to the sea,
Feeling just like me.
That is my Barcelona.
